Tis the Season for Family, Fun & Holiday Festivities! It’s the time to let bygones be bygones & for embracing & engaging in the holiday spirit of love, peace, & joy! All of these fun traditions, events & plans, can inadvertently contribute to excessive financial demands, a lack of sleep, & often a general overdose of work & personal stress! This seasonal stress can easily translate into chronic stress if not managed, & lead to chronic inflammation in the body, acting as a catalyst to a host of health problems, including obesity, heart disease, & diabetes.

 

How can Meditation Lower Inflammation?

Chronic stress can affect the hormone Cortisol, by lowering its ability to manage the body’s inflammatory response, which can then result in heightened levels of inflammation.  Rather than allowing uncontrollable external factors to send us into a stress-induced “fight or flight” response, let’s focus on creating our own internal oasis that we can always return to, no matter the situation.  When you allow external situations & factors to dictate & control your mental state, you’re never truly free, & what’s more stressful than that?! Meditation opens the doors to self-study (Svadhyaya) by cultivating a space within oneself to foster clarity, calm, freedom for authenticity, personal accountability, & non-judgement (just to name a few)!

 

Go Mental (in a GOOD way)!

Since neither life, nor us, are perfect & we can’t control traffic, unreasonable bosses, family tension, or stressful news, rather let’s shift our focus on the area within our realm of control; our state of mind.  Rather than reaching for that extra cocktail or scarfing that whole bag of holiday cookies for an all too temporary fix, let’s see what happens when we tap into the mind through meditation, halting that inflammatory stress response before it starts!

 

Your Two Minute Meditation awaits…

Set yourself up for a day of inner strength, peace, & tranquility before your head even leaves the pillow! Take 2 minutes each morning before you get out of bed to set an intention, and establish your breath for the day. Place one hand on your heart, & the other hand on your abdomen, close your eyes, & focus on drawing in deep, centering breaths, feeling your chest & belly rise & fall.  As you inhale, draw in thoughts of gratitude, words, & mantras that empower you, and as you exhale, visualize your anxieties & stressors exiting through your breath. Practice self-love & manage external stressors by being mindful of the things that are no longer serving you & let them go to create space for that which does.
